How to Rank in AI Search in 2027

TL;DR
  • AI search visibility is achieved through mentions and citations rather than traditional ranking, requiring brands to be included in AI-generated answers.
  • Key strategies for improving AI visibility include ensuring site crawlability, fixing technical SEO issues, creating original answer-first content, and building topic hubs.
  • Earning mentions from reputable sites and maintaining consistent brand information across platforms are crucial for enhancing AI's perception of your brand.

In AI search you do not climb a ranked list. You earn a place in the answer: Your brand is named as an option, or your page is cited as the source behind a claim. Tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini choose a handful of sources per question, and the goal is to be one of them.

Six moves create most of that visibility:

  1. Let AI crawlers reach your site and read it without friction.

  2. Fix the technical foundations, from site structure to technical SEO and schema.

  3. Test what AI already says about your brand, and correct what is wrong.

  4. Write answer-first content that adds something original.

  5. Organise that content into topic hubs and keep it fresh.

  6. Earn mentions on the trusted sites AI tools already read.

The rest of this guide walks through each move in the order we recommend tackling them.

What "ranking" means in AI search

AI visibility comes in two forms: a mention, where the answer names your brand, and a citation, where the answer links to your page as evidence. Both matter, and they are earned in different ways.

Classic search

AI search

What you win

A position in a list of links

A mention or citation inside a written answer

Typical unit of success

Rank and click-through rate

Share of prompts where you appear

What gets picked

Whole pages

Short passages, facts and brand names

Stability

Fairly consistent per query

Varies by user, platform and session

Two consequences follow. First, a clear, quotable passage matters as much as a strong page. Second, you cannot check one position and call it done, so you measure visibility across many prompts and repeat the check over time.

The good news is that much of the work overlaps with sound SEO. Crawlable pages, clear structure and real authority help in both worlds.

The good news is that much of the work overlaps with sound SEO. Crawlable pages, clear structure and real authority help in both worlds.

Step 1: Let AI crawlers in.

If a crawler cannot fetch your page, no AI tool can cite it. Start by opening yourdomain.com/robots.txt and reading every rule.

Look for blanket blocks on the crawlers that feed AI search, such as Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. A single Disallow: / under one of those user agents removes you from that platform's index. Block them only if you have a deliberate business reason, such as protecting paid content.

Then assess for issues that quietly waste crawl effort:

  • Broken links that return 4xx or 5xx errors.

  • Redirect chains that pass through several hops before the final page.

  • Orphan pages that no other page links to.

  • Duplicate or near-duplicate pages that split signals between URLs.

  • Content hidden behind heavy client-side JavaScript, which some crawlers do not render.

A site built on a modern, server-rendered framework avoids most of the last problem. That is one reason website and mobile app development and SEO should be planned together rather than fixed after launch.

Make the structure easy to follow

Organise the site as a simple hierarchy: homepage, then category or service pages, and then detail pages. Keep your most important pages within two or three clicks of the homepage.

Use the footer for links you want reinforced sitewide, such as key services, your best guides and comparison pages. Every orphan page you reconnect is one that crawlers can finally find.

Step 2: Get the technical foundations right

Schema markup tells machines what a page is about. It does not guarantee a citation or a rich result, but it removes guesswork about who you are and what each page offers.

Match the schema type to the page:

Page type

Schema to consider

Homepage or About page

Organization (name, logo, URL, social profiles)

Blog post or guide

Article, with author and date

Page with real questions and answers

FAQPage

Step-by-step tutorial

HowTo

Service page

Service, linked to your Organization

Product page

Product, with price and availability

Only mark up what is visible on the page. Validate every template with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator before you roll it out.

Two other technical habits pay off. Keep pages fast and stable, because slow pages are crawled less and abandoned more. And keep titles, headings and URLs descriptive, for example, /seo-audit-checklist rather than /page-17.

If your current site makes these fixes hard, a redesign may be cheaper than patching. Our UI/UX design and custom software development teams handle that rebuild with SEO requirements written in from day one.

Step 3: Benchmark what AI says about you.

Before you change anything, record where you stand. You should establish a baseline to demonstrate progress later.

Build a list of 20 to 30 prompts that your customers would actually ask. Mix three kinds:

  • Category prompts, such as "best software company in Nepal" or "how much does a website cost in Nepal".

  • Brand prompts, such as "what does [your brand] do", "[your brand] vs [competitor]" and "[your brand] pricing".

  • Problem prompts, such as "How do I ensure my restaurant is my restaurant found on Google?"

Run each prompt on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features, then log the result in a simple sheet:

Prompt

Platform

Brand mentioned?

Page cited

Error or gap found

Example: "[brand] pricing"

Perplexity

Yes.

Third-party review

Shows an old price

Pay special attention to the errors. AI tools can repeat outdated prices, missing services or unfair competitor comparisons, and those mistakes shape how buyers see you. Note the source of each wrong answer, as that is the page you will fix or ask to have corrected in Step 6.

If you track many prompts, an AI visibility tool can automate the repeat checks. A spreadsheet is enough to start.

Finally, list which of your own pages AI already cites. These are usually a small group, and they deserve your first round of updates.

Step 4: Write content AI can quote

AI tools lift passages, not whole pages. Write every section so it still makes sense when it is pulled out on its own.

Structure for extraction

  • Use question-style headings. "How much does a website cost in Nepal?" matches the way people prompt AI.

  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences, then add detail, examples and caveats.

  • Keep paragraphs short. Two to four sentences, one point each.

  • Use lists and tables for steps, options and comparisons.

  • Write declarative sentences. "Schema describes the page to machines" is easier to cite than a vague hedge.

Add what other pages lack

A page that repeats the top ten results gives AI no reason to prefer it. Add information gain: your own data, project lessons, screenshots, expert quotes or a clear perspective. For an agency, that might be what actually broke during a migration, or what a client's analytics showed after a fix.

Weave in the related entities a reader would expect, such as tools, standards, platforms and place names. This helps AI connect your page to the right topics.

Show real expertise

Trust signals matter to people and to the systems that choose sources. For each article:

  • Please name the author and include a short bio with relevant experience.

  • Include first-hand examples rather than generic advice.

  • Link to reputable sources for claims and statistics.

  • Show when the page was last reviewed.

Keep the classic on-page basics tidy as well: a clear title tag, an accurate meta description, a short URL, and descriptive internal links to related pages. Our SEO team treats these as the base layer under every AI-focused improvement.

Step 5: Build topic hubs and keep them fresh.

A topic hub shows AI that you cover a subject in depth, not in passing. It has one pillar page that covers the topic broadly, and several cluster pages that each cover a narrower question and link back to the pillar.

Here is how to build one:

  1. Pick three to five core topics central to your business.

  2. List five to ten sub-questions customers ask about each.

  3. Write the pillar page as a complete overview that introduces all the sub-questions.

  4. Write one cluster page per sub-question, in full detail.

  5. Link every cluster page to the pillar, and link the pillar to every cluster page.

For a Nepal-focused web agency, a hub might look like this:

Role

Example page

Pillar

Website development for businesses in Nepal

Cluster

How much a business website costs in Nepal

Cluster

WordPress or a custom Next.js build: which fits your business

Cluster

Adding eSewa and Khalti payments to an online store

Cluster

Technical SEO checklist before you launch a new site

Use your prompt list from Step 3 and a keyword tool to choose clusters, and give each article three to five target prompts to answer directly.

Please refresh what you already have.

Update your most-cited pages first. Replace old statistics, retire outdated advice, swap in current examples, and refresh screenshots. When the changes are real, update the visible date, and never change the date without changing the content.

Step 6: Earn mentions beyond your own site.

AI tools form a view of your brand from many places, not just your website. The more reputable sites describe you consistently, the more confidently AI names you.

Build mentions and links.

  • Revisit existing mentions. Sites that have already referenced you are the easiest to approach again.

  • Get into "best of" lists and comparison pages. Please email the editor your details, differentiators, and ready-to-use images.

  • Run digital PR. Offer expert commentary or newsworthy company updates to industry and local publications.

  • Contribute guest articles to respected blogs in your field.

  • Join community conversations. AI often cites Reddit and Quora answers. Answer the question first and mention your brand only when it is truly relevant.

Make your brand facts consistent.

AI can end up repeating outdated or conflicting details on third-party pages. Use your Step 3 log to find the wrong answers and trace them to their sources. Then contact the site owner with a short, polite correction request that states what is wrong and what is right.

Also check your profiles on Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Trustpilot, Crunchbase and industry directories. Use the same company name, description, address and services everywhere. A clear brand identity with a single approved description makes the process much easier to maintain.

Reuse each article in other formats

AI tools also cite video and social posts. Turn each strong article into a short YouTube explainer, a LinkedIn post and a few short posts on X. Keep the facts identical across formats so every version reinforces the same message.

A 90-day plan and how to measure it

AI visibility builds over months, so plan in phases and review at the end of each.

  1. Days 1 to 30: audit and baseline. Fix robots.txt blocks, run the technical audit, test your prompt list, and log any errors.

  2. Days 31 to 60: resolve and optimise. Repair crawl issues, add schema, and rewrite your top pages in an answer-first format.

  3. Days 61 to 90: create and distribute. Publish your first hub, refresh your most-cited pages and start outreach and community answers.

  4. After day 90: review and repeat. Re-run the prompt test, compare it with your baseline, and focus more on what worked.

What to track

  • Mention rate: the share of your test prompts where your brand appears.

  • Citation rate: the share where one of your pages is cited.

  • Accuracy: how many wrong or outdated answers remain on your log.

  • AI referral traffic: visits from sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics.

  • Business outcomes: enquiries, calls and qualified leads, which matter more than any visibility score.

Set your targets from your own baseline rather than from another company's numbers. Your starting point, market, and competitors will determine what is realistic.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. Crawlable pages, clear structure, original content and strong authority help in both. AI search adds a focus on quotable passages, brand mentions and accuracy across the web.

Can anyone guarantee a citation in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No. Answers vary by user, platform and time, and no agency controls them. You can improve the odds by making your content simple to find, trust and quote.

How long does it take to see results?

Technical fixes can be picked up within weeks. Authority and mentions usually take months. Measure against your baseline instead of expecting a fixed timeline.

Does schema markup make AI cite my page?

Not by itself. Schema clarifies what a page is, which helps machines read it correctly. It works alongside strong content, not instead of it.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Only if you have a clear reason, such as protecting paid or private content. Blocking them also removes you from the answers those platforms give.

Do small and local businesses need this?

Yes, because people increasingly ask AI for local recommendations and comparisons. Accurate listings, clear service pages and genuine reviews give a small business a fair chance of being named.
